The present building dates to 1845-46.","why_significant":"It is the third mill on its site, which held the first grist mill in the Western Reserve. The nomination calls it a good example of a local industrial building type that once numbered in the hundreds along Ohio's streams. It is one of only a few such mills still standing in the state.","narrative":"Beside a twenty-three-foot waterfall in Mill Creek Park, Youngstown, stands a two-and-a-half-story frame grist mill on a sixty-foot cut sandstone foundation. Built in 1845-46 by German Lanterman and Samuel Kimberley, it needed eighty men and twenty teams of horses to complete. It is the third mill on the site. Isaac Powers and Phineas Hill built a log mill there in 1797-99, the first grist mill in the Western Reserve, and Eli Baldwin built a larger frame mill in 1823 that a flood washed away in 1843. The present building has oak framing, bevel siding and a gabled roof with returns. It ran as a flour mill until about 1888 and became part of the park in 1892. A natural history museum opened on its first floor in 1933. Only two buhrstones remain of the equipment. It was recognized as a good example of the grist mills that once served Ohio communities.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1845-46)","architect_builder":"German Lanterman and Samuel Kimberley","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, owned by the park district and used as a museum; original milling equipment is gone except two buhrstones.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.233863-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001568.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001568/47603f13bf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001568/47603f13bf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Dblcut3","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mill_Creek_Park_Lanterman%27s_Mill.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dblcut3</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mill_Creek_Park_Lanterman%27s_Mill.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"05000178","name":"Mill Creek Park Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/mill-creek-park-historic-district-05000178/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990106","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q123916861"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/mahoning-county/lanterman-mill-74001568/"}
