Built circa 1832 and opened to customers in 1833, it measures roughly forty by twenty feet, including a rear addition. It has a three-bay front, a brick foundation that rises a full story at the south side because of the slope, and a full-height portico carried by four round, fluted Doric columns. A deeply fluted triglyph frieze runs along the cornice. Inside is a center hall plan with a parlor on the east side. Samuel Thatcher, Sr., a prolific builder of sawmills and carding and grist mills, built the tavern as a sideline and ran it from 1833 to 1838. It was the second tavern in the area, after one built by Francis Wilkins in 1827. Thatcher then rented it to a Mr. Baggs and opened a new hotel at the village's eastern edge. The building has been a private residence ever since.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (built circa 1832)","architect_builder":"Samuel Thatcher, Sr. (builder)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and used as a single-family private residence; condition listed as fair, with both interior and exterior in need of attention.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.714765-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001539.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001539/1742efaca6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001539/1742efaca6-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mount_Liberty_Tavern.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mount_Liberty_Tavern.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989505","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138397719"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/knox-county/mount-liberty-tavern-74001539/"}
