Construction began in 1860 and the church opened in 1861.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an excellent and uncommon example of carpenter Gothic, a type of northern Ohio wooden Gothic church less known than the earlier Greek Revival examples. Its angular Gothic motif is used throughout, and its open interior with hammerbeam arches is more interesting than a typical flat-ceilinged Greek Revival interior. It has also seen few alterations.","narrative":"Zion Episcopal Church in Monroeville, Huron County, Ohio, is a small wooden church built in the Early Gothic Revival style often called carpenter Gothic. A single steeple tower sits at the center of the east front. Instead of rounded or arched forms, the pointed Gothic motif appears as an angular gable, repeated in the doors, windows, belfry shutters, tower roof and moldings. Vertical board-and-batten siding covers the walls under a steep roof. Inside, the full roof height is exposed and carried by curved hammerbeam arches with sawed tracery, and a balcony projects into the four-bay nave. The parish was organized in 1854, the cornerstone was laid in 1860, and services began in December 1861 at a cost of $3,500. Bishop Charles P. McIlvaine dedicated it in 1864. The builder is unknown. It was listed as a rare, well-preserved example of northern Ohio wooden Gothic design, with an interior more varied than most Greek Revival churches.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1861)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Gothic Revival (carpenter Gothic)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; altered but with no changes to the exterior design; occupied and in religious use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.03264-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001533.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001533/d45b43afa4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001533/d45b43afa4-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zion_Episcopal_Church_in_Monroeville.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zion_Episcopal_Church_in_Monroeville.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989427","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zion_Episcopal_Church_(Monroeville,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8072513"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/huron-county/zion-episcopal-church-74001533/"}
