It has strong local importance as the museum and headquarters of the Anderson Township Historical Society. Its steeple-notched logs, large fireplace and wide floorboards point to an early construction date.","narrative":"This one-and-a-half-story log house stands at the corner of Clough Pike and Newtown Road in Anderson Township, near Cincinnati. Its walls are hewed and round logs joined with steeple notches. A very large stone chimney with a brick top covers most of the northwest side. Inside are a corner ladder-staircase, wide plank floors and a big fireplace with a likely bake oven. A framed lean-to and enclosed porch were added at the rear. The land was surveyed in 1793 as part of the Virginia Military District, and Nathaniel Massie acquired it in 1796 after largely selling it to Ichabod Miller, who was allowed to occupy it at once. On that circumstantial basis the local historical society assigned a tentative 1796 date. Nothing in the design contradicts an early date. The house may be the last surviving structure in or near the Columbia settlement. Since 1971 it has served as a museum and headquarters for the Anderson Township Historical Society, with public openings and student tours.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (specific date ca. 1796?)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early log house typical of the earliest structures built in southwestern Ohio","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked fair and altered, on its original site; used as a museum and society headquarters, opened periodically to the public and to student tours.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.36895-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001511.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001511/79f7d7e571-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001511/79f7d7e571-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Miller-Leuser_Log_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Miller-Leuser_Log_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989097","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller%E2%80%93Leuser_Log_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6859042"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/miller-leuser-log-house-74001511/"}
