The congregation, which had been meeting in a schoolhouse, decided in 1830 to build a church. Construction began in the summer of 1831, and the building was dedicated in 1832. The builder is unknown. The design is Greek Revival in its detail, including fretted pilasters of a common Asher Benjamin pattern and a Doric frieze with triglyphs, while its overall form and three-stage tower follow the late Adam Style. The entrance frontispiece is divided into two bays with two doorways, an unusual arrangement. It is regarded as one of the chief early Greek Revival monuments of the Western Reserve. Pointed blind arches were added over the windows after 1832, and the interior was changed in 1873, 1880, 1911 and after 1953. The Historic American Buildings Survey recorded it in 1936.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1831)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival, with the basic form and proportion of the late Adam Style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and altered, on its original site; occupied and in religious use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.289573-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001503.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001503/38450de25b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001503/38450de25b-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Carl Waite","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Claridon_Congregational_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Carl Waite</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Claridon_Congregational_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988662","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claridon_Congregational_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5126953"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/geauga-county/claridon-congregational-church-74001503/"}
