It was also the delivery point of the first air freight flight in the United States in 1910. Records of its purchase were lost when the old Columbus City Hall burned.","narrative":"Franklin Park Conservatory is a rectangular building of glass, stone and steel set in a park of about 100 acres in Columbus, Ohio. The land was once the Franklin County fairgrounds, used from 1886 to 1894. A glass dome with a finial rises from the center of a mansard-like roof, and the west facade has a projecting section with small glass towers. The cornerstone is dated 1895, when the structure was re-erected in Columbus. It is known to have been shown at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, but records of its purchase and transport were destroyed in a fire at the old city hall. A red brick addition on the east side houses the city parks division, and a growing house is attached. Inside are about 250 tropical and desert plants. In 1910 a Wright Model B airplane delivered a bolt of silk here, billed as the first air freight delivery. In 1926 circus animals wintered inside.","period_of_significance":"1895","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, altered and moved from its original site; occupied and used for educational tours, with an attached growing house and a parks division headquarters.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.922798-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001489.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001489/5d660281df-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001489/5d660281df-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.5","author":"Analogue Kid at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FPConservatory.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Analogue Kid at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.5</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FPConservatory.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988408","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_Park_Conservatory","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5491740"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/franklin-county/franklin-park-conservatory-74001489/"}
