Its builder, Ebenezer Andrews, promoted the Milan Canal, opened the town's first bank and served as Erie County's first probate judge.","narrative":"Built in 1825 at 200 South Main Street in Milan, Ohio, this two and one-half story frame house is a fully developed example of Greek Revival design. It rests on a sandstone foundation and has a side-hall plan with the gable end facing the street. A horizontally sheathed pediment with a fan window tops the front, and the classical doorway has sidelights, a transom and paneled pilasters with applied acanthus ornament. Inside, the original fireplaces and wooden mantels survive. Ebenezer Andrews, a lawyer and businessman, built it as his home. He promoted the Milan Canal, served as an original canal company director, opened the town's first bank and later served as Erie County's first probate judge. Milan was a major grain shipping center by 1840, and the Andrews house was the most elaborate residence built in the village during the early canal period. It is regarded as one of the finest early Greek Revival mortise and tenon frame homes in the Firelands.","period_of_significance":"1825","architect_builder":"Ebenezer Andrews (builder/owner)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Excellent condition, occupied as a private residence; altered only slightly (rear porch screened, some ell windows changed for kitchen modernization).","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.454048-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001467.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001467/4d711d1463-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001467/4d711d1463-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE AND ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EBENEZER_ANDREWS_HOUSE;_ERIE_COUNTY,_OHIO.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">JERRYE AND ROY KLOTZ MD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EBENEZER_ANDREWS_HOUSE;_ERIE_COUNTY,_OHIO.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988122","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebenezer_Andrews_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5331644"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/erie-county/andrews-ebenezer-house-74001467/"}
