Its layers of alteration (1848, 1875, 1943) show changing styles on one building. Restoring it after the 1943 fire, instead of demolishing it, is cited as evidence of growing preservation interest.","narrative":"Chagrin Falls Township Hall is a one-story brick building on North Main Street, on land set aside as a Public Square in the village's 1837 plat. Aristarchus Champion proposed a public lecture hall and library there in 1847, and it opened in 1848. The building later housed a private school before township trustees acquired it in 1864. In 1875 a second story was added in High Victorian Italianate style, along with arched windows with hood moldings, two small side wings and an octagonal cupola. A fire in 1943 destroyed the upper story, and the first floor was restored, with a new pediment, fanlight and cupola. Its Greek Revival facade, divided by four Doric pilasters, remains, and the interior is largely from 1875. The building was listed because its many alterations record shifts in nineteenth-century taste, and because its restoration after the fire reflects early concern for preservation.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific dates 1848; 1875; 1943)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival with High Victorian Italianate and later alterations","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in good condition, altered, on its original site, and used for government purposes.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.887905-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001432.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001432/2be562bb47-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001432/2be562bb47-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chagrin_Falls_Township_Hall.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chagrin_Falls_Township_Hall.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"78002036","name":"Chagrin Falls Triangle Park Commercial District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/chagrin-falls-triangle-park-commercial-district-78002036/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987411","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137642153"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/chagrin-falls-township-hall-74001432/"}
