Hanna Jr., led the M.A. Hanna Company and was a cultural and educational patron.","narrative":"This three-story brick mansion in the Jacobethan Revival style occupies a ten-acre estate on Lake Erie in Bratenahl, Ohio. Designed in 1909 by the New York firm McKim, Mead and White and built in 1909-1910, it has a steep gabled roof, a large central gable on the lake front flanked by three smaller gables on each side, stone-framed casement windows, and a stone Tudor archway at the boulevard entrance. Inside, a central hall plan includes a living room, library, dining room, seven bedrooms and a third-floor suite for servants. The house was long attributed to Stanford White, but it was designed after his death. It is a rare surviving work of the firm in the Cleveland area, since White's Leonard C. Hanna house on Euclid Avenue was demolished in 1957. Howard M. Hanna Jr. headed the M.A. Hanna Company, which was reorganized in 1922, and he supported education and the arts, including bringing the Metropolitan Opera to Cleveland.","period_of_significance":"1909-1910","architect_builder":"McKim, Mead and White","architectural_style":"Jacobethan Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, altered (heating system rebuilt in 1933), on its original site, in use as a private residence at the time of nomination, with preservation work in progress.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.248933-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001431.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001431/c111e43279-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001431/c111e43279-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Howard_M._Hanna,_Jr.,_House_through_the_fence.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Howard_M._Hanna,_Jr.,_House_through_the_fence.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987792","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q111751695"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/hanna-howard-m-jr-house-74001431/"}
