Rocky River Drive, Berea, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, built in 1868 by George W. Whitney beside the Rocky River where it forms Baldwin Lake reservoir.","why_significant":"The house is presented as one of a vanishing number of lavish Victorian Italianate homes expressing the new wealth of the post-Civil War period. It was built by a leader of the Berea sandstone industry, and its well-preserved exterior and interior show how wealthy industrialists lived. It also commemorates Whitney's role in the industry that made Berea the sandstone capital of the world.","narrative":"Overlooking the Rocky River where it widens into Baldwin Lake reservoir, this large three-story brick house in Berea was built in 1868 by George W. Whitney, an early figure in the Berea sandstone industry. Whitney began quarrying in the 1840s and in 1871 joined other industrialists to found the Berea Stone Company, which by 1879 produced 3,000 tons of grindstones a year and employed 100 people. The house reflects that wealth in the Victorian Italianate style, with a hipped roof topped by a bracketed cupola, a veranda, stone window hoods, and a cornice with dentils and large double brackets. Inside, a central hall and single-flight staircase organize the plan, and each room has its own parquet floor pattern. Seven of eight original marble mantelpieces survive. Little has changed since construction, so the house gives a clear view of how prosperous post-Civil War industrialists lived. It is sometimes called the Poole house after a later owner.","period_of_significance":"1868","architect_builder":"George W.
