It housed the mayor, police, fire department and jail, with a hall upstairs for meetings, dances, plays and sports. Listing was sought to help save it from planned demolition and allow reuse as a museum annex and community center.","narrative":"Built in 1889, Crestline City Hall is a two-story red brick building on a low stone foundation at 121 W. Bucyrus Street. Projecting bays on the south and west faces hold round-arched stone entries with five keystones, flanked by Corinthian columns, and plain stone quoins mark the corners. Upper windows are tall paired lancets, and a mansard roof once carried a decorative iron rail. Bricks came from a local brickyard, and stone from a nearby quarry was hauled to the site by mudboat, with local mason John Kess doing all the stonework. The hall held the mayor's office, police, fire department and jail, while the second floor served as a gathering place for meetings, dances, plays and basketball. A local museum began upstairs in 1949. In 1961 the roof was replaced and a wood clock tower with chimes replaced the original steeple tower. Facing demolition under an urban development plan, it was proposed for reuse as a museum annex and senior community center.","period_of_significance":"1889","architect_builder":"John Kess, local stone mason (stone work)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Fair condition, altered; the original colonnaded steeple tower was replaced by a wood clock tower in 1961.
