It was built in 1871 by Zimri Wall.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an outstanding example of the multiple kingpost truss, a type popular with early Ohio bridge builders. It was built by Zimri Wall, who later helped found the Champion Bridge Company, which regards it as its oldest surviving bridge. It is also the last covered bridge wholly within Clinton County.","narrative":"This covered wooden bridge carries County Road 14 over the east fork of Todd's Fork, one mile west of Martinsville in Clinton County, Ohio. Zimri Wall built it in 1871, though county records no longer hold its cost or construction details. It is a seven-panel multiple kingpost truss, 78 feet long overall with a clear span of about 68 feet and a 13-foot-6-inch roadway. Steel was added to the floor system and truss panels in 1937, and the east abutment was rebuilt in concrete in 1970. Vertical siding, battens and a metal roof complete the structure, which is painted dark red with white portals. In 1872 Wall, his brother Jonathan and Albert Bailey formed the Champion Bridge Company of Wilmington, which considers this its oldest surviving bridge. It is the last covered bridge wholly within Clinton County and remains in daily use. The truss type was widely used by early Ohio builders.","period_of_significance":"1871","architect_builder":"Zimri Wall","architectural_style":"Multiple kingpost truss (7-panel) covered bridge","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and still carrying daily traffic; the east abutment was rebuilt in concrete in 1970.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.112685-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001421.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001421/9cab8a8a51-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001421/9cab8a8a51-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Aesopposea","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MartinsvilleCoveredBridge.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Aesopposea</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MartinsvilleCoveredBridge.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987186","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martinsville_Road_Covered_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q60742719"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/clinton-county/martinsville-road-covered-bridge-74001421/"}
