It was built when no restrictions limited design or construction method, yet its owner chose substantial log construction with four fireplaces. It is presented as representative of Ohio vernacular log architecture at its best.","narrative":"Standing on a well-drained knoll southeast of Springfield, this two-story log house dates to about 1834. Its logs are half-dovetailed at the corners, which in Ohio indicates construction after about 1825 and an intention to leave the log walls exposed. Joists, rafters, sheathing and flooring were cut at a vertical sawmill. An unusual feature is the eave: the second-floor ceiling joists rest on and overhang the plate logs, and the rafters bear on the joist ends, giving a wide overhang with little framing. Inside, a central front door opens into a living room with a fireplace, with a smaller kitchen, corner stairwell and bedrooms above, four fireplaces in all. The house was listed because it is a typical Ohio log house of its era and remains sound enough for restoration. Few of the thousands of surviving log houses in the state meet that standard. Careful alterations by early owners suggest the house served them well.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (ca 1834)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Ohio vernacular log architecture (half-dovetailed log construction)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Two frame additions and siding have been removed and the wall logs are in sound condition; restoration had begun but was noted as stopped for the time being.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.334189-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001411.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987072","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/clark-county/brewer-log-house-74001411/"}
