Ward. It is the birthplace of sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward, who lived and worked there for much of his life. The nomination says the house and grounds are the only physical record of his life.","narrative":"Built around 1820 on a stone foundation, this two-story brick house in Urbana has an ell-shaped plan, a five-bay front facing east, and a center hall interior. Its double-hung windows have six lights over six, and a rear wing includes a porch that was probably enclosed in the twentieth century. Colonel William Ward, who founded Urbana in 1805, built it as a wedding gift for his son John A. Ward. In 1830 the sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward was born there. He trained under Henry Kirke Brown, later worked in Columbus and New York, and made statues of Washington, Commodore Perry and Lafayette, as well as the pediment of the New York Stock Exchange Building. He served as president of the National Sculpture Society from 1896 until his death in 1910. A one-and-one-half-story frame barn on the five-acre tract still holds his intact studio. The house and grounds are described as the only physical record of his life.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (built circa 1820)","architect_builder":"Colonel William Ward (builder)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition and altered; in use as a private residence; the barn is now used as a garage, with the studio intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.935489-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001409.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001409/1bed18c6ea-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001409/1bed18c6ea-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Q.A._Ward_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Q.A._Ward_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987034","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Q.A._Ward_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6253618"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/champaign-county/ward-john-q-a-house-74001409/"}
