Its furnishings, decor and much of the landscaping are original and belonged to Robert Harper, an important figure in early Western Reserve and Ohio public affairs. Harper was a lawyer, active in politics, and the first state representative from Ashtabula County.","narrative":"Shandy Hall is a wooden house near Unionville in Ashtabula County, Ohio, begun in 1815 by Robert Harper on a stone foundation. The original story-and-a-half section had two rooms on the ground floor, two upstairs and an open garret around a center chimney. Between 1818 and 1828 shed additions were built on the north, west and east, adding secondary rooms and the banquet hall, which has a coved ceiling, a fireplace and its original French wallpaper. The original kitchen and service rooms remain in the basement. In the nineteenth century the central chimney was replaced and a front stairway was added. Harper was the son of Alexander Harper, an early settler who came from Harpersfield, New York, in 1798. Robert Harper was a lawyer and the first state representative from Ashtabula County. The house is valued as an early, well-preserved Western Reserve dwelling whose furnishings, decor and much landscaping are original. The Harper family kept it until 1938, and it now serves as a museum.","period_of_significance":"1815 - 1828","architect_builder":"Robert Harper (began the house in 1815)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good and altered, on its original site.
