Its vertical board-and-batten siding is unusual, especially in northern Ohio.","narrative":"Standing at 301 Liberty Street in Conneaut, this two-story octagonal house is built of wood frame and topped by a pyramidal roof with an octagonal lantern that lights the central stairwell. Bracketed eaves with pendant knobs, slightly pointed window lintels and vertical board-and-batten walls give it some Italian Villa character. The board-and-batten siding is fairly unusual in northern Ohio, and a north-side porch appears to be a later addition. Each floor has four principal rooms. It was built for David Cummins, born near Buffalo, New York, in 1827, who worked as a harness maker until 1863, when he opened a canning factory that became the D. Cummins Company. He remained active in the business until 1909. The exact construction date is unknown, but the 1860s is most likely. The house is valued as a rare surviving octagon house and as the only building of architectural character in its immediate neighborhood.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Octagon house with some Italian Villa features","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, altered, on its original site, in use as a private residence; the interior was not available for inspection.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.313419-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001394.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001394/b68bd65e9d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001394/b68bd65e9d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ymblanter","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:David_Cummins_Octagon_House_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ymblanter</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:David_Cummins_Octagon_House_2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986649","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Cummins_Octagon_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5232715"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/ashtabula-county/cummins-david-octagon-house-74001394/"}
