Its richly paneled walls, wainscots and mantels are described as apparently stylistically unique in the state, and the circa 1900 alterations are called interesting in themselves. It was also the home of one of the earliest families to settle in present Warren County.","narrative":"Set on a dirt road near Manson in Warren County, this frame plantation house is five bays wide under a hip roof. Its exterior was heavily remodeled around 1900, with replaced siding, plate glass sash and one-story porches carrying Ionic columns. Inside, the original Georgian layout survives, and Edwardian additions blend with it so closely that the periods are sometimes hard to separate. The southeast room has one of the few fully paneled walls in the state, along with an unusual mantel and carved pilasters. The stair hall and second-floor rooms keep tall paneled wainscots and distinctive integral mantels. The land was owned by Green Duke from 1784 until 1811, and he is believed to have built the house. His family was among the earliest to settle in the area. The William Twitty family later owned it, and it is now part of Soul City and serves as a day care center.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"Believed built by Green Duke; possibly by a previous owner (Eaton)","architectural_style":"Georgian, with post-Victorian/Edwardian alterations","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked good and altered; the form states the house is used as a day care center as part of Soul City.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.910076-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/6/7227/47722706/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/74001383.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001383/3fdecbceb8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001383/3fdecbceb8-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Indy beetle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Green_Duke_House,_Soul_City.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Indy beetle</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Green_Duke_House,_Soul_City.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722706","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Duke_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20639051"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/warren-county/duke-green-house-74001383/"}
