It combines an early Federal frame house, a Greek Revival brick section and an early twentieth-century connecting block.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an imposing, well-detailed plantation house that was the home of Joseph McDowell Carson of the politically prominent Carson family. It later passed to industrial figure Franklin Coxe. The house is also valued as an interesting composite of additions made up to the twentieth century.","narrative":"Perched on a rise above the Green River floodplain in Polk County, North Carolina, Green River Plantation is a two-story house built in three stages. It began as a frame Federal-style house facing west. During the Greek Revival period a similar two-story brick structure was added to the rear, facing south. Early in the twentieth century a connecting section joined the two, along with porches and wings, while the earlier structures kept their integrity. Interior details include paneled wainscot, molded mantels and a painted landscape frieze. Outbuildings include log and frame buildings and a Gothic Revival family chapel on the hilltop. The property is tied to Joseph McDowell Carson, a lawyer who served in the state legislature and who probably built the house after buying the land in 1807. His half-brother Samuel Price Carson married there in 1831. Financier Franklin Coxe later bought the property and used it as a summer home.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Joseph McDowell Carson, probable builder (tradition credits the Federal block to him; he certainly built the Greek Revival section)","architectural_style":"Federal and Greek Revival (composite); Gothic Revival family chapel","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good and altered, on its original site; occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.082-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/62/7218/47721862/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/74001370.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001370/a9795ba5bb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001370/a9795ba5bb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bigskybill","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Green_River_Plantation.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bigskybill</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Green_River_Plantation.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721862","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_River_Plantation","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19720614"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/polk-county/green-river-plantation-74001370/"}
