It was probably built in the late 1840s by planter Josiah Granbery.","why_significant":"The nomination calls Stockton the only known example in North Carolina of the tripartite house type executed in the Greek Revival style. Its unusual proportions and full prostyle tetrastyle portico are described as apparently unique among the state's tripartite houses. It was also the boyhood home of Robert Welch, founder of the John Birch Society.","narrative":"Stockton is a frame house in the Greek Revival style, set on a plantation tract west of Little River near Woodville in Perquimans County. Its three-part plan has a deep, two-story central block with a pedimented Doric portico, flanked by one-story wings. The central section is only three bays wide, giving the house unusual, narrow proportions, and the doorway is framed by a Greek key motif. Inside, the finish is plain Greek Revival, with molded door and window frames and varied mantels. Planter and legislator Josiah Granbery assembled the land beginning in 1833 and probably built the house in the late 1840s. It is considered the only known North Carolina example of a tripartite house in the Greek Revival style, and its full four-column portico appears unique among the state's tripartite houses. In the early twentieth century it was the boyhood home of Robert Welch, later founder of the John Birch Society.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":"Josiah Granbery (builder, probably 1840s)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival (tripartite house)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as fair and altered; the house is occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.956132-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/7217/47721738/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/74001368.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001368/bc44aeedbe-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001368/bc44aeedbe-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":null,"credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historic_American_Buildings_Survey,_FRONT_FACADE._-_Stockton,_State_Route_1329,_Hertford,_Perquimans_County,_NC_HABS_NC,72-HERF.V,7-1.tif\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historic_American_Buildings_Survey,_FRONT_FACADE._-_Stockton,_State_Route_1329,_Hertford,_Perquimans_County,_NC_HABS_NC,72-HERF.V,7-1.tif"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721738","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockton_(Woodville,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q25203161"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/perquimans-county/stockton-74001368/"}
