Its double porches under the main roof and its fine exterior and interior detail make it an outstanding member of a regional group of houses, apparently the earliest in style. Its builder came from a family of regional and state importance.","narrative":"Cove Grove is a large two-story frame plantation house on Old Neck Road near Hertford, built about 1830 by planter Benjamin Smith Skinner. Full-height Ionic porticos cross the front and rear, sheltered by extensions of the main gable roof and resting on a brick arcade. The five-bay facade centers on an oversized fanlit entrance, with a second-level door opening onto a small iron balcony. Inside, a center-hall plan holds parlors joined by sliding doors beneath an arch, Federal-style mantels with sunburst ornament, and a stair ending in a carved newel. The house blends Greek Revival massing with delicate Federal detail and is considered the stylistically earliest of a regional group of related houses. Skinner supported local academies and founded the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity in Hertford. The house has stayed with his descendants, apart from a sale at auction in 1870 to a family member. A small latticework gazebo stands southwest of the house.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":"Benjamin Smith Skinner (builder)","architectural_style":"Transitional Federal-Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition, unaltered, on its original site, and used as a private residence; occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.544162-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/48/7217/47721748/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/74001366.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001366/9904f51201-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001366/9904f51201-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Related names: Skinner, Joshua Skinner, Benjamin Waterman, Thomas T, historian Waterman, Thomas T, photographer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historic_American_Buildings_Survey,_Thomas_T._Waterman,_Photographer_July,_1940._-_Cove_Grove,_State_Route_1301,_Hertford,_Perquimans_County,_NC_HABS_NC,72-HERF.V,2-2.tif\" rel=\"noopener\">Related names: Skinner, Joshua Skinner, Benjamin Waterman, Thomas T, historian Waterman, Thomas T, photographer</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historic_American_Buildings_Survey,_Thomas_T._Waterman,_Photographer_July,_1940._-_Cove_Grove,_State_Route_1301,_Hertford,_Perquimans_County,_NC_HABS_NC,72-HERF.V,2-2.tif"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"96000929","name":"Old Neck Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/old-neck-historic-district-96000929/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721748","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cove_Grove","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19601548"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/perquimans-county/cove-grove-74001366/"}
