The Georgian house keeps well-preserved traditional exterior and interior features, including mantels and an unusual rear stair. The larger Greek Revival addition has distinctive details that tie it to 1840s houses in nearby Warren County.","narrative":"Matthews Place, locally called Ivey Hill, near Hollister in Halifax County, North Carolina, combines two two-story frame houses set at right angles and joined by an enclosed passage. The older, late Georgian house dates to about 1800 and was probably built for Colonel Isham Matthews. Its molded siding, dentil cornice, Flemish bond chimneys and intact interior with handsome mantels and an unusual rear stair remain largely unchanged. The Greek Revival house, added about 1847 and probably built for his son Thomas P. Matthews, is larger. It has a side-hall plan, a pedimented porch with fluted Doric columns, marbleized baseboards, and a two-flight stair. Its mantel follows a design associated with Warrenton builder Jacob Holt, and its details resemble 1840s houses near Inez in Warren County, including Saxon Hall and Fairmont. Together the houses show two generations of domestic architecture in northeastern North Carolina. Later owners included attorney Bartholomew Figures Moore and the Leach and Watson families.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1800, ca. 1847","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Georgian and Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked fair and the property is checked as altered and on its original site.
