The one-and-one-half-story house dates to about 1790, with a two-story Greek Revival addition on its west side.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it a late Georgian plantation house, an ambitious version of the coastal cottage house-type, and one of few surviving eighteenth-century domestic buildings in the Upper Cape Fear River Valley. Its wide shed porch with plastered cove ceiling is noted as especially interesting. It was built by George Elliot, a local political leader, and has stayed in his family's hands.","narrative":"Ellerslie is a plantation house set at the end of a circular drive on the south bank of the Lower Little River in Cumberland County, North Carolina. The original one-and-one-half-story house was built about 1790 by George Elliot, who had settled the area by 1787, owned thousands of acres, and represented Cumberland County at the 1788 Hillsborough Convention. It has a steep gable roof, three dormers, nine-over-nine windows, and a Quaker-style first-floor plan. A wide shed porch with an arched plastered ceiling once wrapped all four sides. Between 1844 and 1864, his son Alexander, a state legislator, probably added a two-story Greek Revival wing to the west, featuring paired Doric columns and a transomed entrance. The house is regarded as a late Georgian example of the coastal cottage type and as one of the few surviving eighteenth-century domestic buildings in the Upper Cape Fear region. It has remained with Elliot's descendants.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"George Elliot (builder); Alexander Elliot probably added the Greek Revival section","architectural_style":"Late Georgian (original house); Greek Revival (addition)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, altered, on its original site, and used as a private residence; occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.006893-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/30/7198/47719830/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/74001344.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001344/d6521eee15-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001344/d6521eee15-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Mueller65","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ellerslie_Fireplace.png\" rel=\"noopener\">Mueller65</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ellerslie_Fireplace.png"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719830","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellerslie_(Linden,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18206778"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/cumberland-county/ellerslie-74001344/"}
