It also cites the landscape setting of old trees and lichen-covered stones.","narrative":"Beaufort's Old Burying Ground fills most of a block between Ann, Craven and Broad streets and covers about two acres. A 1724 deed to the Anglican parish is the earliest definite record of its use for burial, and it was enlarged in 1731 and again by Methodist and Baptist church lots in the nineteenth century. A concrete wall surrounds it, and live oaks draped with resurrection ferns shade the ground. The markers include cypress slabs, long brick grave covers, obelisks and ornate iron-fenced family plots, among them the Norwood plot's 1865 fence from Boston. Many stones are signed by makers in Boston, Charleston, Brooklyn and Baltimore, reflecting Beaufort's ties to the sea. Buried here are Otway Burns, whose grave is marked by a cannon from his privateer, and Captain Josiah Pender. Together, the history, the varied markers and the shaded setting led to its listing.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as deteriorated but unaltered, on its original site, with preservation work in progress; in use as a cemetery.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.581124-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/36/7194/47719436/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/74001332.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001332/c5f5a35603-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001332/c5f5a35603-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Carl Griffith","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Burying_Ground_Beaufort,_North_Carolina.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Carl Griffith</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Burying_Ground_Beaufort,_North_Carolina.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"74001331","name":"Beaufort Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/beaufort-historic-district-74001331/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719436","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Burying_Ground_(Beaufort,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18151877"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/carteret-county/old-burying-ground-74001332/"}
