The town was settled in the early eighteenth century, traditionally in 1709, and laid out on a grid surveyed by Richard Graves.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that Beaufort is a rare, little-altered maritime village whose plan, scale and consistent architecture reflect its dependence on the sea. Its multi-slope gable roofs, double porches, chimneys and mantels form a distinctive local building tradition. The waterfront row of houses, the commercial block, the churches and the Old Burying Ground add to its character.","narrative":"Beaufort is a small coastal town in Carteret County, North Carolina, laid out in a compact grid beside a harbor opposite Beaufort Inlet. Settled in the early eighteenth century and surveyed by Richard Graves, it became a port of entry in 1722 and was incorporated in 1723. Its livelihood has long depended on fishing, shipbuilding, shipping, resort trade and marine research. The district covers about 900 acres of mostly one- and two-story frame houses, many with the steep-then-shallow gable roofs and full-width double porches that give the town its look. Front Street faces the water with a row of white houses, from coastal double-porch dwellings to Queen Anne cottages. Other features include St. Paul's Episcopal Church (1857), the 1907 Carteret County Courthouse, a late nineteenth and early twentieth century commercial row, and the Old Burying Ground dating from about 1724. Few buildings are exceptional on their own, but the consistent scale and form of the whole town is the basis for its listing.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1710 to present","architect_builder":"Herbert Woodley Simpson (designer of the 1907 Carteret County Courthouse); Richard Graves (original town survey)","architectural_style":"Vernacular coastal types with Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne and Shingle influences","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked as mixed on the form, from excellent to deteriorated. Urban renewal is noted as a threat to the commercial block.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.561873-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/7194/47719416/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/74001331.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001331/ca71dc0416-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001331/ca71dc0416-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Carl Griffith","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historical_Beaufort_NC.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Carl Griffith</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historical_Beaufort_NC.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719416","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaufort_Historic_District_(Beaufort,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18148381"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/carteret-county/beaufort-historic-district-74001331/"}
