It includes a stone house begun in the 1720s, an 18th-century Dutch barn, a carriage house and an ice house.","why_significant":"The farm is presented as an unspoiled, complete and well-preserved example of early Dutch life and building practice in the Hudson Valley. The stone house grew in stages as the family's wealth increased, and its outbuildings reflect that rising prosperity. The homestead also remained in the Decker family for more than a century.","narrative":"Johannes Decker Farm is a Dutch farm complex of about 65 acres on the alluvial plain of the Shawangunk Kill in Ulster County, New York. The Decker family settled here around 1695. In the 1720s Johannes Decker built a one-room stone house, which became the core of the present dwelling. Additions followed before 1750, in 1784 and in 1787, producing a one-and-one-half-story T-shaped house with a flared Flemish gable roof and four brick chimneys. Southwest of the house stands a Dutch barn from about 1750 whose center aisle posts were spliced for extra height. A carriage house and an ice house, both wood frame, were added in the 18th century. The complex is valued as a complete and well-preserved example of Dutch farming life in the mid-Hudson region. The house grew with the family's means, and the later outbuildings show increasing prosperity. The property stayed within the family for more than a century.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries (specific dates 1720s, 1784, 1750)","architect_builder":"Johannes Decker (built the original 1720s stone structure)","architectural_style":"Dutch (Hudson Valley Dutch stone house and Dutch barn)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and altered, occupied, with preservation work in progress; in agricultural and private residence use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.056982-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/74001312.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001312/f07b04b9cd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001312/f07b04b9cd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"MAXahf","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Johannes_Decker_Farm,_2014.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">MAXahf</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Johannes_Decker_Farm,_2014.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322592","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Decker_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6216623"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/decker-johannes-farm-74001312/"}
