Route 25) in the Branch section of Smithtown, Suffolk County, New York, with an early half-house dating from the 18th century, enlarged shortly after 1800.","why_significant":"The inn sat at the crossing of two of Long Island's major 18th century roads and for nearly a century was the center of Smithtown's social and political life. It is also a fine example of 18th century vernacular architecture, one of few left after 20th century commercialization of the island's main roads.","narrative":"Halliock Inn is a shingled wood-frame building on Middle Country Road in the Branch, a tree-shaded remnant of an old crossroads village in Smithtown. It has a two-and-a-half story main block, formed by an early half-house and a west extension, plus a one-and-a-half story rear kitchen wing. Tall, narrow windows and a steep roof give it a distinctive vertical look. Inside are a large kitchen fireplace with a beehive oven and a third-floor room with an arched ceiling. Thomas Halliock was the first owner of record, and the house was enlarged shortly after 1800. For nearly a century it served as a hostelry on the stagecoach route between Brooklyn and eastern Long Island. It hosted town meetings, courts, balls, and Masonic gatherings, and Walt Whitman took meals there while teaching in 1837-1838. It later became a boarding house and, from 1907, a residence. Today it also serves as a museum.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"18th century vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, altered, on its original site, and still serving as a residence and museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.678463-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/74001310.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001310/5cc46846b0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001310/5cc46846b0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Halliock_Inn;_Village_of_the_Branch-2.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Halliock_Inn;_Village_of_the_Branch-2.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322132","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halliock_Inn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5643010"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/halliock-inn-74001310/"}
