It was the first church in the Town of Woodbury and has been in continuous use since 1803.","narrative":"Quaker families near Highland Mills built this plain meeting house about 1803, after forming a Preparative Meeting in 1790 and gathering in a private home for about ten years. The two-acre site was acquired in 1801, and the building is believed to have been raised by members of the meeting. Title stayed in the names of several families until 1886, partly because Friends had faced occasional confiscation of property. The one-and-one-half story wood frame building rests on a fieldstone foundation, with a gable roof, a four-bay porch and twin front entrances. Inside, sliding panels once split the space into rooms for men and women, and handmade benches, tables and two wood stoves remain. A mid-nineteenth century renovation changed some trim and probably added the porch and the clapboards. It was the first church in the Town of Woodbury and has been in continuous use since 1803, still hosting the annual meeting. A Quaker cemetery lies behind it.","period_of_significance":"19th century (specific date 1803)","architect_builder":"Believed to have been built by members of the meeting","architectural_style":"Plain style characteristic of early Quaker buildings","criteria":[],"status_note":"Good condition and in continual use since 1803; still hosts the annual meeting and is shown by appointment.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.892253-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/74001290.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001290/ae898fa571-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001290/ae898fa571-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smith_Clove_Meeting_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smith_Clove_Meeting_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320742","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_Clove_Meetinghouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2295347"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/smith-clove-meetinghouse-74001290/"}
