It is also described as one of Archimedes Russell's exceptional designs and one of the best Richardsonian-manner buildings in central New York State. It was funded by banker John Crouse and built by Norcross Brothers, who built several H. H. Richardson designs.","narrative":"Crouse College occupies a hilltop on the Syracuse University campus and is the university's most prominent visual landmark, visible from much of the city. The L-shaped building is made of Longmeadow sandstone on a granite base, with carved string courses, Byzantine-derived pilasters, corbelling, slate roofs, three cupolas and a high northeast tower with a belfry. A relief over the north doorway shows musical instruments and a palette, fitting for a fine arts building. At the south end, a carved wooden staircase leads to a two-story auditorium with colored glass, original stencilled borders and an open timber roof. Designed by Archimedes Russell and built by Norcross Brothers, it was donated by banker John Crouse and dates to 1881-4. It is regarded as a very early college building devoted only to fine arts instruction, and a professor of architecture calls it one of central New York's best examples of the Richardsonian manner. Most of its interior remains intact.","period_of_significance":"1881-4","architect_builder":"Archimedes Russell (architect); Norcross Brothers of Worcester, Massachusetts (builder)","architectural_style":"Richardsonian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in excellent to good condition and unaltered, with most of the interior intact apart from minor partitioning; used for education.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.111462-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/74001285.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001285/0245996a70-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001285/0245996a70-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Kiran891","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crouse_College_Syracuse_University_02.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Kiran891</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crouse_College_Syracuse_University_02.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320326","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crouse_College","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5189041"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/crouse-college-syracuse-university-74001285/"}
