Fillmore lived here from 1826 until 1830 while building a law practice and starting his political career. The house retains much of its original form and structure despite being moved and altered.","narrative":"Built in 1826 by Millard Fillmore soon after his marriage, this clapboard one-and-one-half-story house in East Aurora served as the home of the future 13th President until he moved to Buffalo in 1830. Fillmore had become the town's only attorney after passing the bar in 1823, and his practice grew across western New York. He was elected to the State legislature in 1828 while living here. The house was originally on Main Street, with his law office across the road. In 1915 it was moved back on its lot to make room for a movie house, and it later fell into neglect. In 1930 the front section was moved about a mile to Shearer Avenue and renovated. Columns and rear additions were added, and the front section became an artist's studio. The original floorboards, plain interior trim and most old windows remain. It is the only surviving Fillmore residence apart from the White House.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Millard Fillmore","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as a private residence and artist's studio, in good condition, altered and moved; occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.253927-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/74001235_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001235/22eecd4e7e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001235/22eecd4e7e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pubdog","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Millard_Fillmore_House_Sep_12.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Millard_Fillmore_House_Sep_12.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315742","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fillmore_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5448856"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/erie-county/fillmore-millard-house-74001235/"}
