It illustrates the development of an early Dutch community over three centuries and shows a diversity of styles and community functions in an agricultural setting.","narrative":"Kinderhook Village District covers the historic core of a village in Columbia County, New York, laid out along U.S. Route 9 and County Route 21 on higher ground above Kinderhook Creek. About 250 structures stand within it, roughly 200 built before the 20th century and about a dozen from the 1700s. Dutch farmers from the Albany area settled here in the 1650s and 1660s. Surviving buildings range from the Cornelius Schermerhorn House, built in sections between about 1713 and 1770, to David Van Schaack's brick house of 1774 and the Federal-style James Vanderpoel House of 1810. Greek Revival, Gothic Revival and bracketed buildings also appear, along with a livery stable, a Dutch barn, a smokehouse and a former forge. Most buildings are one to two and a half stories, giving the district a consistent scale. It was listed for the quantity and quality of its architecture and for showing how a prosperous inland farming village developed, with open fields along the creek still intact.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries","architect_builder":"Barnabus Waterman of Hudson (designer of the 1810 James Vanderpoel House)","architectural_style":"Dutch colonial farmhouse and gambrel forms, neo-classical, Federal, Greek and Gothic Revival, and bracketed mid-19th century styles","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked good; the area is occupied, with present uses including residential, commercial, religious, educational, government, museum and agricultural.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.22873-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/74001227.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001227/220433b520-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001227/220433b520-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Main_square,_Kinderhook,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Main_square,_Kinderhook,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317020","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinderhook_Village_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6410582"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/columbia-county/kinderhook-village-district-74001227/"}
