It was won by Gibson over H. H. Richardson in a well-publicized competition and supported by Albany's leading families. It also preserves the work of many craftsmen, notably stone carver Louis J. Hinton.","narrative":"Begun in 1884 on land donated by Erastus Corning, All Saints Cathedral in Albany was planned as one of the largest Episcopal cathedrals in the country, 320 feet long, with foundations laid for two massive west towers. Young English architect Robert Gibson won the commission over H. H. Richardson. Gibson designed a provisional shell, finished in 1888, to be embellished over time. The reddish-pink Potsdam stone east end and choir followed in 1902-1904. The interior is nearly complete, with clustered stone pillars carved largely by Louis J. Hinton, nave windows honoring old Albany families, and glass by Clayton and Bell of London and John LaFarge. The exterior remains unfinished, partly because the State Education Building, built in 1911-1913 close beside it, limited expansion. The cathedral is valued as a record of Episcopal ambition in the late nineteenth century and of the craftsmen who built it.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Robert W.
