It retains much of its original furnishings and furniture. It also records early design elements Wright later dropped, and it displays the decorative design and sculpture of Wright and Richard Bock.","narrative":"Susan Lawrence Dana House at 301 Lawrence Avenue in Springfield, Illinois, is a large residence designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1902, with a separate library connected by a glass-enclosed gallery and added in 1905. Wright built the new house around the family's earlier home, which stood on the lot, and demolished the old structure as work proceeded. He preserved one room from it, and the original basement and foundation walls remain. The exterior combines buff Roman brick, a limestone base, brown terra cotta on the second story and low tile-covered gabled roofs. Stained glass appears throughout, with geometric patterns drawn from prairie plants. Inside, a two-story stair hall holds a statue by Richard Bock, and a two-story dining room contains fine glass and chandeliers. The house is regarded as one of Wright's grandest from his Oak Park period and as an important architectural monument. It keeps much of its original furniture and shows early design features Wright later abandoned.","period_of_significance":"1902-06","architect_builder":"Frank Lloyd Wright (architect); Richard Bock (sculptor)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and unaltered, on its original site; marked as occupied and used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.604761-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/8940/28894042/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/74000774.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000774/0114805555-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000774/0114805555-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.5","author":"Traveling V at English Wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dana_Thomas_Windows.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Traveling V at English Wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.5</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dana_Thomas_Windows.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28894042","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dana%E2%80%93Thomas_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5214650"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/sangamon-county/dana-susan-lawrence-house-74000774/"}
