It is an impressive, well-detailed example of early modern design by a former Frank Lloyd Wright chief draftsman. Buildings of this character, size and quality are rare, giving it regional, local and international significance.","narrative":"Shedd Park Fieldhouse is a two-story brick recreation building in the southwest corner of a small public park in Chicago's South Lawndale neighborhood. Built in 1916 for the West Park Commission, it measures 36 by 78 feet and has rough mottled brown brick walls, Indiana limestone trim, a gabled roof and a monumental entrance with a wood trellis. Inside are a game room, meeting rooms and a second-floor auditorium with a stage, a small balcony and exposed decorative double-beamed arches. A complementary gymnasium was added behind it in 1928. The architect, William Drummond, trained at the University of Illinois and worked in Frank Lloyd Wright's Oak Park studio. The building is regarded as one of the most important Prairie School works and as the best fieldhouse in that style. The park is named for merchant and philanthropist John G. Shedd, who supported the project.","period_of_significance":"1916","architect_builder":"William Drummond (architect); gymnasium addition by Michaelsen & Rognstad","architectural_style":"Prairie School","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition, altered, on its original site, and in public use as a park fieldhouse; the original Spanish tile roof has been replaced with asbestos asphalt shingles.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.35992-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/82/8920/28892082/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/74000755.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000755/215335e166-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000755/215335e166-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Arturo Duarte Jr.","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shedd_Park_Fieldhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Arturo Duarte Jr.</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shedd_Park_Fieldhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892082","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shedd_Park_Fieldhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7492298"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/shedd-park-fieldhouse-74000755/"}
