It is a representative example of the Italianate style. Its complex surface contrasts with the many Miesian structures that dominate the area.","narrative":"Located at 36 West Randolph Street in Chicago's Loop, the Bryant Block, later known as the Delaware Building, was built in 1872-74 during the rebuilding boom after the 1871 fire. It was designed by Wheelock and Thomas, one of Chicago's oldest architectural firms. Constructed of stone and brick, it fronts 80 feet on Dearborn Street and 120 feet on Randolph Street. The first two stories use metal and glass for display windows, while the upper floors have Doric and Corinthian pilasters, columned window jambs and pronounced keystones. A skylit interior light court has metal stairs with glass prisms and brass and wrought iron railings. A remodeling in 1889 removed three bays from the Randolph facade, added two stories of artificial stone, and renamed it the Real Estate Board Building. It was listed because it is the only major building in an important Loop position to retain its 1870s character, offering a contrast to the surrounding Miesian structures.","period_of_significance":"1872-74","architect_builder":"Wheelock and Thomas","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in fair condition and altered, in commercial use at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.440843-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/8920/28892016/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/74000749.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000749/5b2bfa1761-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000749/5b2bfa1761-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Delaware_Building_Chicago_2.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Delaware_Building_Chicago_2.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892016","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delaware_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3021484"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/delaware-building-74000749/"}
