It is the only surviving structure of predominantly Gothic inspiration in Athens. Unusual features include the concave veranda roof, cast iron mantels and heavy walnut interior woodwork.","narrative":"Built around 1860 at 749 Cobb Street in Athens, the Sledge House is a large Gothic-style cottage of one and a half stories. It has white stuccoed brick walls about eighteen inches thick, a tall steeply pitched roof, three triangular dormers and a front veranda with cast iron detailing and a concave metal roof. Inside, a wide central hall holds a stair behind an ogee arch, and the walnut doors and moldings repeat round-arched panels and wooden bosses. Cast iron mantels fill the rooms. The land belonged to Ferdinand Phinizy before James A. Sledge, editor of the Southern Banner, bought it in 1860. Tradition credits Sledge with building the house. It was listed because it is an outstanding Gothic example in a town dominated by Greek Revival buildings, and the only surviving structure of mainly Gothic inspiration in Athens. Wings were added in the 1880s or 90s, and the woodwork was painted white in 1950.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (c.1860)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, altered, on its original site, privately owned, occupied and rented to students; the owners hoped to sell it to someone interested in preservation.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:41.267796-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/74000668.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000668/546527ef80-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000668/546527ef80-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Dennis O'Kane, Photographer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_Sledge_House,_749_Cobb_Street,_Athens_(Clarke_County,_Georgia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dennis O'Kane, Photographer</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_Sledge_House,_749_Cobb_Street,_Athens_(Clarke_County,_Georgia).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"78000973","name":"Cobbham Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/cobbham-historic-district-78000973/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207502","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_A._Sledge_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q85770585"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/clarke-county/sledge-james-a-house-74000668/"}
