It was a gift from Ellen Browning Scripps to the La Jolla Woman's Club.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the building as one of San Diego's finest examples of Gill's mature style and of his use of tilt-slab reinforced concrete construction. It also honors Ellen Browning Scripps, the benefactor, and the club that has cared for it. Landscaping by Kate Olivia Sessions was part of the design.","narrative":"Located at the southeast corner of Silverado and Draper Streets in La Jolla, this clubhouse was designed by architect Irving John Gill and built in 1913-1914. It was given, with its land, by Ellen Browning Scripps to the La Jolla Woman's Club, which still owns it and uses it as a meeting hall. The building reads as a broad, low rectangle with seven large arched openings, a shaded veranda and vine-covered loggias at the sides. A low hipped roof rises over the main assembly room, which has clerestory windows. Gill used tilt-slab reinforced concrete, raising whole walls with doors and window frames into place, then stuccoing them cream. The nomination cites it as a fine example of his mature work, with multiple-use spaces, high windows and climate-suited design. Kate Olivia Sessions planned the landscaping. The deed returns the property to Scripps's heirs if its purpose is violated or the grounds are neglected. The building has been only slightly altered.","period_of_significance":"1913-1914","architect_builder":"Irving John Gill (architect); landscaping by Kate Olivia Sessions","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in excellent condition and only slightly altered, mainly at the rear; used as a meeting hall.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.648291-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/74000546.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000546/588291e7d4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000546/588291e7d4-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Marvin Rand, HABS photographer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:La_Jolla_Women%27s_Club_(La_Jolla,_CA).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Marvin Rand, HABS photographer</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:La_Jolla_Women%27s_Club_(La_Jolla,_CA).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860900","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Jolla_Woman%27s_Club","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5963948"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-diego-county/la-jolla-womens-club-74000546/"}
