It is described as one of Eureka's finest examples of Victorian commercial architecture, representing the height of a period of very ornate decoration.","narrative":"Built in 1893 on Eureka's waterfront, this two-story building at First and F Streets was constructed entirely of local redwood. It has decorated pillars on the first-floor facade, elaborate scrollwork and dentils on the second story, and two upstairs bay windows, one angled over the corner entrance. F. A. Weaver opened it as the Wave Saloon on the site of the former Humboldt House hotel. First Street was then a gathering place for loggers, sailors and stevedores, and the upstairs was remembered as one of several houses of prostitution. In the 1920s it became the Bluebird Cabaret, remembered as a bootlegging establishment, and later the Golden State Cafe. During World War II it was seized from a cafe owner and later used to store used appliances until 1973. Listing recognized it as one of the few waterfront structures suggesting the late nineteenth-century district and as a fine Victorian commercial building. Exterior repair and urban renewal work were underway at the time.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1893)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian commercial architecture","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked deteriorated; exterior recently repainted and decorative columns repaired, interior renovation incomplete and the building unoccupied at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.622497-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/74000511.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000511/23a1b3334e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000511/23a1b3334e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Ellin Beltz","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_and_F_Street_Building_Eureka_CA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ellin Beltz</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_and_F_Street_Building_Eureka_CA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"91001523","name":"Eureka Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/california/eureka-historic-district-91001523/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858750","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133267190"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/humboldt-county/first-and-f-street-building-74000511/"}
