It is also the birthplace and boyhood home of Samuel Osgood (1747-1813), a Revolutionary War aide, member of the Continental Congress and first Postmaster General under the new Constitution.","narrative":"Built around 1740 on a five-acre lot in a rural-residential part of North Andover, this clapboard house shows the classical style of the mid-18th century. It has a center hall, eight rooms, three chimneys and seven fireplaces set in field-panelled walls, with stop-fluted pilasters, a dentilled cornice and hinged interior shutters. Later changes include an enclosed side entrance added in 1931, a rear dormer and an altered rear ell. Three later outbuildings stand on the property. The house is also known as the birthplace and boyhood home of Samuel Osgood (1747-1813). Osgood served as an aide to General Artemus Ward during the Revolution, sat in the Continental Congress from 1781, and became one of the first three Treasury commissioners. President Washington appointed him the first Postmaster General under the Constitution. During the Revolution the house sheltered books from Harvard's library, and a historical marker about Osgood's career was placed outside in 1953.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (specific date 1740)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Classical, mid-18th century","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and altered, on its original site; occupied as a private residence, with preservation work in progress.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.557235-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/7949/63794938/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/74000380.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000380/410feb678f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000380/410feb678f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorthAndoverMA_SamuelOsgoodHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorthAndoverMA_SamuelOsgoodHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794938","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Osgood_House_(North_Andover,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7412320"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/osgood-samuel-house-74000380/"}
