It was the homestead of Samuel Fowler, Jr., an important commercial figure in Danvers in the first half of the 19th century. The civic involvement of Fowler and his children also makes it important to local history and government.","narrative":"Built in 1810, this four-square brick house at 166 High Street in Danversport was commissioned by Samuel Fowler, Jr. from the builders Stephen Whipple and Levi Preston. The two-story house has five-bay elevations, six-over-six windows, fanlit entrances, a truncated hip roof with a widow's walk, four end chimneys and a granite foundation. A brick ell and a later addition stand at the rear. Inside, original wallpapers survive, including a hand-blocked Pompeian Medallion design in the front hall, along with hand carving such as egg-and-dart mouldings and reeding. The house stayed in the Fowler family until 1912, when it passed to the preservation society's founder. Fowler built a business in mills and tanning in what was then New Mills, and he and his sons served Danvers as selectmen and in other civic roles. The house was recognized for remaining substantially unaltered and as a good example of Country Federal architecture.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1810)","architect_builder":"Stephen Whipple and Levi Preston (builders)","architectural_style":"Country Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, altered, and occupied; owned by the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, with some original Fowler family furnishings on view.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.691671-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/54/7949/63794954/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/74000367.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000367/f74b045318-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000367/f74b045318-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Fletcher6","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fowler_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Fletcher6</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fowler_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794954","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fowler_House_(Danvers,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5476416"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/fowler-house-74000367/"}
