It covers about 53 acres and some seventy buildings plus canal remains.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the village preserves a largely intact mid-nineteenth-century canal and mercantile town in a relatively unspoiled natural corridor. It also cites the village as evidence of private enterprise in historic preservation. Significance areas checked are architecture, commerce, engineering and transportation.","narrative":"Peninsula is a canal-era village on the Cuyahoga River, laid out along one east-west highway, State Route 303. The district takes in about seventy buildings, among them a stone town hall built as a schoolhouse around 1857, three churches, stores, a G.A.R. hall, an 1887 Stick Style high school and houses in frame, brick and stone. Their styles range from late Federal and Greek Revival to Italianate and Eastlake. Canal remains are also included: the river elbow, a dam, a spillway, aqueduct ruins and Lock 29 of the Ohio Canal. Hermon Bronson arrived in 1824, platted the village in 1837 and tunneled through the neck of a river loop to power a gristmill. Canal traffic, boat building, mills, cheese factories and sandstone quarries made the village prosper, and the Valley Railroad arrived in 1875. The district was listed because it preserves this mid-nineteenth-century town largely intact, and because private restoration has kept its buildings occupied and sound.","period_of_significance":"1827-1887","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Federal, Greek Revival, Early Gothic Revival, Italianate, Stick Style and Eastlake","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked excellent but altered; all buildings are stated to be occupied, many restored and adapted to residences and small shops, and unrestored ones are structurally sound.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.861942-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74000346.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000346/cde7edaf9b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000346/cde7edaf9b-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peninsula_United_Methodist_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peninsula_United_Methodist_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991561","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peninsula_Village_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7162975"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/summit-county/peninsula-village-historic-district-74000346/"}
