The document dates the central section to 1769 and the early construction to before 1739.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the complex is an excellent example of an eighteenth-century mid-Atlantic farm that shows its evolution through successive additions. It also argues the property is historically important because Major General Lord Stirling, a general in Washington's army, occupied it during the 1777-78 winter at Valley Forge, and because it records early Pennsylvania farm life.","narrative":"Stone farmhouse complex at Valley Forge, Chester County, Pennsylvania, built in several stages from the 1730s onward. The west section was probably begun before 1739 as a one-room, one-story house, the central section is dated to 1769, and the west section was later deepened into two rooms and given a full second story. The three sections are plastered stone with medium gable roofs. Original features that survive include cooking fireplaces, early doors and windows, moulded chair rails, wainscot and two stair closets. A bakehouse, a springhouse and an outbuilding stand on the site. The property is significant for its association with Major General Lord Stirling, a general in George Washington's army, who occupied the house during the winter of 1777-78 at Valley Forge. Stirling also fought in the New York campaign and at the Battle of Brandywine. The complex is valued as a record of eighteenth-century Pennsylvania farm life.","period_of_significance":"C1738 1769 1791","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The 1926 renovation was carried out under the direction of Boyle Irwin, and the enclosed entry on the front porch was added in the 1930s.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:29.623439-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/74000283.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000283/aac28a4bb5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74000283/aac28a4bb5-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lord_Sterlings_Quarters_Valley_Forge.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lord_Sterlings_Quarters_Valley_Forge.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"66000657","name":"Valley Forge National Historical Park","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/valley-forge-national-historical-park-66000657/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71998464","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maj._Gen._Lord_Stirling_Quarters","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6737284"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/chester-county/stirling-maj-gen-lord-quarters-74000283/"}
