It was probably built between 1695 and 1714 for Thomas Keeling.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of Virginia's best-preserved small, pre-Georgian brick manor houses. It is noted for its fine brickwork and interior woodwork, especially the glazed-header chevron patterns in the gables, a late-seventeenth century device found on fewer than half a dozen surviving structures in the state.","narrative":"Keeling House is a compact brick dwelling at the head of a cove off the Lynnhaven River in Virginia Beach. It is five bays wide and 1 1/2 stories tall, with a gable roof and interior-end chimneys. The brickwork is Flemish bond with glazed headers above a beveled water table and English bond below. Each gable carries glazed-header chevron patterns, nine to a gable, a late-seventeenth century decorative device that survives on fewer than half a dozen structures in Virginia. Inside, the north room has a paneled end wall with chimney closets and fluted pilasters, and the stair has turned walnut balusters and a closed stringer with pulvinated frieze. The house was probably built between 1695 and 1714 for Thomas Keeling on a tract called Dudlies, inherited from his father Adam Keeling in 1683. The Keeling family kept the house and about three hundred acres until 1881. A modern wing has been added to the south side, and later sash and frames replaced the originals.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Pre-Georgian brick manor house","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in excellent condition, altered, on its original site, and occupied as a private residence; the house and grounds are described as maintained in excellent condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:58.018538-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/95/6839/41683995/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73002297.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002297/6270ae42b1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002297/6270ae42b1-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":null,"credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adam_Keeling_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adam_Keeling_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683995","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Keeling_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4679318"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/virginia-beach/keeling-house-additional-documentation-73002297/"}
