The original section was built in 1754 for Isaac Hollingsworth by stone mason Simon Taylor.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it the oldest house in Winchester and one of the oldest in the region, and an excellent example of colonial stone architecture in the Shenandoah Valley. It follows the central-hall, two-over-two plan used by Scotch-Irish settlers. It was also the seat of the Hollingsworth family, whose tract dates to the 1730s.","narrative":"Abram's Delight is a two-story limestone farmhouse in Winchester, Virginia, built in 1754 by Isaac Hollingsworth. Stone mason Simon Taylor constructed it using random rubble limestone, and the main block follows the central-hall, two-over-two plan favored by Scotch-Irish settlers in the Shenandoah Valley. The Hollingsworth family held the land by 1732. A stone wing was added before 1801 for Jonah Hollingsworth, and his son David later built a brick addition that no longer exists. During David's tenure a stone mill was erected and a large lake with islands and summer houses was created. Mid-nineteenth-century alterations gave the doors and windows their present trim. Winchester bought the house in 1943, and the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society serves as custodian. The house has been restored and operates as a museum. It is recognized as the oldest house in Winchester and as a fine example of colonial stone architecture in the region.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (specific date 1754)","architect_builder":"Simon Taylor, stone mason; built for Isaac Hollingsworth","architectural_style":"Eighteenth-century Shenandoah Valley farmhouse; central hall, two-over-two plan; Greek Revival stair","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored and functioning as a historic house museum owned by the City of Winchester; condition described as good, with the second floor altered for a custodian's living quarters.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.722886-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/6841/41684150/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73002230.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002230/7a0e7a1e58-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002230/7a0e7a1e58-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Joel Bradshaw","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterVA-AbramsDelight-house-oblr.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Joel Bradshaw</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterVA-AbramsDelight-house-oblr.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41684150","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abram%27s_Delight","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16157871"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/winchester/abrams-delight-73002230/"}
