It also played a strategic role in the Fredericksburg Campaign, when General Lee placed a breastwork at the foot of the hill to guard the river crossing.","narrative":"Fall Hill is a two-story brick plantation house on a hilltop northwest of Fredericksburg, Virginia, overlooking the Rappahannock Valley. Built probably around 1790 for Francis Thornton V, it follows the late-Georgian style, with a hipped roof, Flemish bond walls and a central-hall plan. Around 1830 the house was extensively remodelled, with new sash, doors and Greek Revival trim, and some bricked-up windows. Some eighteenth-century woodwork survives upstairs, including an Adam-style mantel. The house sits in a park of old trees, boxwood walks and terraces. It was the seat of the Thornton family, a distinguished colonial Virginia family whose land holdings in Spotsylvania County date to about 1720. During the Fredericksburg Campaign, General Lee fortified the foot of the hill, and a shift in fighting spared the house. Later owners included Dr. John Roberts Taylor and, by gift, Murray Forbes Taylor.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian, with Greek Revival alterations","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, occupied as a private residence, and on its original site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.968438-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/41/6837/41683741/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73002062.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002062/8beffff8e9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002062/8beffff8e9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Wikipelli","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fall_Hill_(Spotsylvania_County,_Virginia).png\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipelli</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fall_Hill_(Spotsylvania_County,_Virginia).png"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683741","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_Hill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5432044"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/spotsylvania-county/fall-hill-73002062/"}
