It is also a good example of a modest late eighteenth century Southside plantation house, with a distinctive Chinese lattice railing on the second story.","narrative":"Belmont is a one-and-a-half story plantation house at the end of a long lane northeast of Capron, in Southampton County, Virginia. Built probably in the late eighteenth century for George Carey, it has a five-bay facade, a central hall plan, beaded weatherboarding, gable dormers and a Chinese lattice railing along the second-floor stairwell. Original fireplaces remain in every room, and several nineteenth century outbuildings survive nearby, including a smokehouse and an office. The property is listed chiefly for its role in the Nat Turner slave revolt of 1831. On the morning of 23 August, Turner and about twenty men advanced on the home of Dr. Samuel Blunt, who, with his son and other men, defended the house with help from the Blunt slaves gathered in the kitchen. Several of Turner's men were killed and others, including his chief lieutenant Hark, were captured, effectively ending the revolt.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"Built for George Carey (builder not named)","architectural_style":"Simple late eighteenth century plantation house (Southside Virginia)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition of the fabric is described as good; the house is a private residence and has been altered with rear additions and central heating.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.693093-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/1/6837/41683701/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73002061.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002061/ec6560049d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002061/ec6560049d-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Belmont_near_Capron.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Belmont_near_Capron.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683701","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belmont_(Capron,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15198302"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/southampton-county/belmont-73002061/"}
