The nominated area covers about 100 acres along Route 252.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that Brownsburg gives an excellent picture of a typical early Valley village in a well-preserved state. Rail and highway routes bypassed the town, so it kept most of its early nineteenth-century dwellings and supporting structures. Its buildings are mainly in an unembellished Valley Federal style.","narrative":"Brownsburg is a small village in Rockbridge County, Virginia, set above Hays Creek in the rolling hills of the Valley of Virginia. It was legally established in 1793 on land belonging to Robert Wardlaw and Samuel McChesney. By 1835 it had about twenty dwellings, three stores, two shoe factories, mills and a range of craft shops, and it was known for private schools in the nineteenth century. When the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's Valley Branch and later U.S. Route 11 were built several miles east, commercial activity moved away. Most buildings date from the first half of the nineteenth century or from 1870 to 1910. Many are two-story frame or brick houses in a plain Valley Federal style, some with log cores under clapboard, and a few have crow-stepped gables. Today the village is mostly residential, and several former store-dwellings keep their early storefronts. Its lasting form and buildings are the basis for its listing as a local-level district of about 100 acres.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Valley Federal (vernacular), with later nineteenth-century frame houses","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked good and altered; the district is occupied and is now almost entirely a residential village, with a few commercial buildings, a school, a church and a general store.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.680877-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/6834/41683422/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73002055.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002055/03c5855a25-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002055/03c5855a25-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brownsburg_southern_section_on_252.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brownsburg_southern_section_on_252.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683422","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownsburg_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15205187"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/rockbridge-county/brownsburg-historic-district-73002055/"}
