It was built by Francis Thornton for his son William.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it the most historically noted and architecturally imposing early plantation house remaining in Rappahannock County. Its evolving form, fine early woodwork and long association with the Thornton family, including visits by George Washington, add to its importance. It is described as a major landmark of piedmont Virginia.","narrative":"Montpelier is a large plantation house on a steep hill in the Francis Thornton Valley near Sperryville, Rappahannock County, Virginia. Its core dates to the eighteenth century, when Francis Thornton, who received a grant of many thousands of acres and arrived about 1740, built it for his son William. Later additions include brick second stories on the wings, a two-story east verandah with eight Tuscan columns, and a stucco coat scored to resemble ashlar. The interior has fireplaces in every room and a fully panelled north room with a metope-and-triglyph frieze. The house passed from the Thorntons to the Shackleford family in 1876 and to a Thornton descendant in the late 1960s. George Washington, a cousin of the Thorntons, was a frequent visitor. The house was altered in the early twentieth century, when window sashes were changed. It was unoccupied and structurally sound but poorly maintained when described. Outbuildings and barns remain on the grounds.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Francis Thornton (built Montpelier for his son William)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as presently unoccupied; condition fair, structurally sound but not well maintained.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.345717-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/37/6828/41682837/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73002052.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002052/5bdf6b6ae7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002052/5bdf6b6ae7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"self","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Montpelier_near_Sperryville,_closeup_of_house.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">self</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Montpelier_near_Sperryville,_closeup_of_house.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682837","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montpelier_(Sperryville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15255838"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/rappahannock-county/montpelier-73002052/"}
