It is unusual for standing apart from the dwelling, and unique for a tunnel linking house, well and fort. The 1856 brick house has an unusual painted living room interior.","narrative":"Fort Philip Long is a farm complex on a hill above the Shenandoah River near Stanley, in Page County, Virginia. Its oldest feature is a tall barrel-vaulted fort of random rubble limestone, pierced by loopholes and originally buried underground, with a secret trapdoor entrance closed by a boulder. A tunnel cut into the limestone runs from the basement of a nearby stone house, past a well, into the vault, giving a safe passage and a protected water supply. The fort is thought to date from the French and Indian War period, when Indian attacks threatened German settlers of the Massanutten country. Philip Long settled the tract in 1733, and his son Paul or grandson Philip probably built the fort. The complex also includes an 1856 brick house built by Isaac Long for his son, with a living room painted to imitate panelling and an Italian marble mantel, plus a stone slave quarter. The tunnel and the remote fort distinguish it from other forts in the county.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Fort possibly built by Paul Long or Philip Long; 1856 brick house built by Isaac Long for his son Isaac, Jr.","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in fair condition, unaltered, on its original site; present use is marked vacant, and the form also checks occupied.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.431024-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/6824/41682422/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73002048.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002048/6a7a09f495-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002048/6a7a09f495-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cecouchman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ForPhilipLongMarker_5106.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cecouchman</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ForPhilipLongMarker_5106.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682422","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Philip_Long","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15218135"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/page-county/fort-philip-long-73002048/"}
