Its compact, well-proportioned form and pastoral setting of green pastures bordered by woods add to its value. It was once the center of a self-sufficient plantation, and a frame school house is the only surviving outbuilding.","narrative":"Deer Chase is a story-and-a-half brick farmhouse in Middlesex County, Virginia, built around 1740 on land first patented by Oswald Cary in 1685. It has three bays, a double-pile plan, a clipped-gable roof, six dormers and Flemish bond brickwork, with interior end chimneys and a central hall flanked by rooms. A fire in the early nineteenth century damaged the east chimney and wall. The wall was rebuilt, the first floor trim was replaced, the windows were enlarged and a Greek Revival mantel was installed, but the exterior is otherwise largely original. The property stayed in the Cary family until 1799, then passed to Philip Ludwell Grymes and later to the Nicolson family, which held it until 1906. After years of neglect it was renovated from 1958 onward. The house is regarded as a typical small Tidewater rural dwelling. A frame school house is the only surviving outbuilding, and the pastoral setting remains intact.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Tidewater farmhouse; Greek Revival east mantel added after the fire","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, altered, on its original site, and used as a private residence; renovation was completed by the owners who acquired it in 1969.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.150095-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/56/6819/41681956/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73002039.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002039/3131012cbf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002039/3131012cbf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Deadrise71","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Front_Portico.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Deadrise71</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Front_Portico.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681956","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deer_Chase","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712230"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/middlesex-county/deer-chase-73002039/"}
