It also holds colonial tombs, a wooden chest believed to date from 1677, and a documented parish history. It has served as a Methodist church since 1857.","narrative":"Lower Church is a rectangular brick chapel near Hartfield in Middlesex County, Virginia. In 1710 the vestry of Christ Church Parish ordered three new chapels of ease, and this one was built on the site of an older parish chapel. Captain Henry Armistead and Major Edmund Berkeley built it, and it was ready for use by October 1717. The walls are about 27 inches thick, laid in English bond with large brick of varied color, and the roof keeps its clipped gables. Marked bricks near the west door may record the 1715 completion of the walls to that height and the initials of builders. Inside are a colonial communion plate and linen chest, and a tomb from 1687 is built into the structure. Two more colonial tombs lie east of the chancel. After the Disestablishment the building was abandoned by the Episcopalians, and it has been a Methodist church since 1857. Its clipped gable roof is rare among surviving colonial Virginia churches.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (specific date 1717)","architect_builder":"Captain Henry Armistead and Major Edmund Berkeley","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked good and altered; in religious use as a Methodist church, with repairs under way including new lighting and removal of the west porch.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:58.135273-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/70/6819/41681970/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73002038.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002038/2f445d9afe-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002038/2f445d9afe-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Michael Kotrady","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lower_Middlesex_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Kotrady</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lower_Middlesex_1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681970","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712753"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/middlesex-county/lower-church-73002038/"}
